Edge asks: What have you changed your mind about?

Posted by: Emre Sevinc   in General

When thinking changes your mind, that’s philosophy.
When God changes your mind, that’s faith.
When facts change your mind, that’s science.

“Science is based on evidence. What happens when the data change? How have scientific findings or arguments changed your mind?

The list of 163 contributors includes the usual suspects?the cast of the MIT Media Lab, angry atheists Richard Dawkins and Daniel Dennett, computer science guru turned right-wing political pundit David Gelernter, and various other techno-libertarian, futurist, and cognitive science types. There were a few surprises in the line-up, but for the sake of world peace I won’t name any names. And truly, anyone who skims the list will find themselves thinking “this person is a public intellectual and thought leader?!” But it’s a general rule that any club roster or “Top $FOO $ENTRY_TYPE of $TIME_PERIOD” list that doesn’t include an entry for oneself is best enjoyed with a tall, ice-cold glass of Hatorade.*

(*Hatorade is the official sports drink of my current academic home, the University of Chicago. Upon admission, each student is issued a Hatorade-sponsored chip to wear on his or her shoulder for the rest of his or her life. That chip is engraved with the names of all of the school’s Nobel laureates, so it is very, very large.)
