Below is the answer given to the question “What are some of your life heuristics?”. They belong to ACM Fellow and A.M. Turing Award recipient Edward A. Feigenbaum, a pioneer in the field of expert systems. This excerpt is from this interview.
* Pay a lot of attention to empirical data, because in empirical data one can discover regularities about the world.
* Meet a wonderful collaborator — for me it was Joshua Lederberg — and work with that collaborator on meaningful problems
* It takes a while to become really, really good at something. Stick with it. Focus. Persistence, not just on problems but on a whole research track, is really worth it. Switching in the middle, flitting around from problem to problem, isn’t such a great idea.
* Life includes of a lot of stuff you have to do that isn’t all that much fun, but you just have to do it.
* You have to have a global vision of where you’re going and what you’re doing, so that life doesn’t appear to be just Brownian motion where you are being bumped around from one little thing to another thing.

Sick of the vuvuzela? Me too. If you’re watching the game on your computer like I am, just download and run this program to filter your live World Cup broadcast in real-time (ESPN3, BBC, etc), choosing which level of de-vuvuzela’ing filtering you find most suitable. No installation required, just download and run!

Ali Nesin’in başına gelenleri, TÜBİTAK Başkanı Nüket Yetiş’e yazdığı 5 Haziran tarihli mektubundan aktarıyoruz:

Statement by Dr. Yaman Akdeniz, Associate Professor, Human Rights Law Research Center, Faculty of Law, Istanbul Bilgi University, and Director of Cyber-Rights.Org. (lawya@cyber-rights.org):
The situation in terms of Internet censorship has moved from BAD to WORSE in Turkey as the Telecommunications Communication Presidency (TIB) asked the Turkish Internet Service Providers to block access to certain IP addresses associated with YouTube. As it is well know access to YouTube has been blocked from Turkey since May 2008, and DNS-poisoning method has been used until very recently. However, as of yesterday TIB asked the Turkish ISPs to block access to certain IP addresses associated with YouTube. The ISPs then started warning their users that as a result of the most recent IP blocking certain Google services may also be affected.
Since last night a considerable number of Google related services have been affected from Turkey. These are:
